Against the backdrop of growing public awareness of eye protection and rising demand for outdoor activities, sunglasses have become essential accessories for daily sun protection and eye care. As the core functional component of sunglasses, lens material directly determines ultraviolet (UV) resistance, optical imaging quality, wear safety and service life. At present, four major lens materials dominate China’s eyewear market: nylon, CR-39 resin, TAC polarised film and polycarbonate (PC). These materials differ significantly in production processes, core performance, strengths and weaknesses, as well as applicable scenarios. 1. Nylon Lenses
Nylon serves as the core material for high-end sunglasses and boasts the most comprehensive optical performance among all lens materials. It is widely adopted in professional outdoor gear and mid-to-high-end branded eyewear. Manufactured via high-precision purification processes, nylon features a uniformly dense molecular structure, delivering two core merits: low chromatic aberration and distortion-free imaging. It reproduces colours of objects accurately and delivers a transparent natural field of vision, effectively eliminating common visual defects such as colour cast and blurriness found in ordinary lenses.
In terms of environmental adaptability, nylon lenses offer outstanding thermal stability with strong high-temperature resistance and anti-deformation capacity. Their robust structural toughness allows them to withstand harsh outdoor conditions including sandstorms, extreme temperatures and bumpy terrain. For protective performance, raw nylon lenses block full-spectrum UV rays up to 400 nanometres (UV400), delivering complete sun protection without extra coatings.
Its primary drawbacks lie in high production costs and limited surface abrasion resistance. Fine scratches may develop after prolonged use, requiring regular maintenance. Nylon lenses are ideal for professional outdoor work and premium daily wear.
2. CR-39 Resin Lenses
CR-39 resin lenses represent the most popular classic lens material on the market. Balanced basic performance makes them the mainstream choice for daily commuter sunglasses. Treated with professional hard coatings, they possess high surface hardness and excellent scratch resistance, fending off daily friction and minor collisions for consistent long-term service life. They generate pure optical images with even light transmission free of stray light interference, delivering crisp vision. The lightweight material also eliminates obvious nasal compression even during extended wear for superior comfort.
When coated with professional UV-blocking layers, CR-39 lenses fully filter harmful UV radiation, fully meeting daily eye sun protection demands. However, the material has obvious limitations: its brittle texture results in weak impact resistance, and heavy impacts or falls may cause cracking. Long-term exposure to intense heat and sunlight also triggers yellowing and ageing. Therefore, CR-39 lenses are only suitable for low-intensity scenarios such as daily commutes, city trips and casual outings, and are not recommended for outdoor sports or high-speed cycling.
3. TAC Polarised Lenses
Fabricated with triacetate cellulose substrates through multi-layer composite lamination, TAC polarised lenses are professional functional lenses integrating sun protection and glare reduction, specially engineered to relieve eye strain caused by strong reflected light. Equipped with precision polarised coatings, they filter horizontal polarised glare reflected off road surfaces, water bodies and glass curtain walls, reducing continuous intense light stimulation to eyes, easing visual fatigue and drastically improving visual clarity and comfort under bright light.
These lenses are thin, flexible, waterproof, corrosion-resistant and resistant to deformation from humidity, while providing 100% UV shielding for stable sun protection. Their inherent disadvantages include moderate surface scratch resistance; prolonged sun exposure may degrade coating layers. Due to polarisation optical principles, partial colour darkening may occur when viewing certain LCD screens, which counts as a normal optical phenomenon. TAC polarised lenses are perfectly suited for driving, angling, seaside visits and snow trips with strong reflective light.
4. PC Lenses (Space Explosion-Proof Lenses)
Also known as space explosion-proof lenses, polycarbonate (PC) lenses are safety-focused lenses made of high-molecular elastic polymers, celebrated for extreme impact resistance. They are the primary material for sports sunglasses and children’s protective eyewear. The highly flexible material delivers impact resistance far superior to ordinary resin lenses, resisting drops, bending and shattering. No sharp fragments will form upon heavy impact, minimising the risk of eye laceration for maximum safety.
Additionally, PC lenses are ultra-lightweight for barely perceptible all-day wear and maintain stable UV blocking performance to deliver lasting eye protection. Nevertheless, the material has notable flaws in optical performance: low surface hardness leads to frequent scratching, and a high chromatic aberration coefficient results in lower imaging precision and colour reproduction compared with nylon and CR-39 lenses. PC lenses prioritise safety protection rather than high-definition visual performance.
